And the people they left behind... talk about the irresponsibility as a soldier.
Just because your country has been defeated and ur leader has announced the surrender then u all feel defeated and want to flee just for the sake of your own life first.
Abandoning the people they were meant to protect is truly an act of failure as a soldier.

An army sent to protect has stronger morale than an army sent to invade.

You can see this first hand in Ukraine right now. Russia's morale is in shambles where as the Ukrainian defenders morale is more stable.

If your emperor surrenders and says the war is over that also doesnt help your troops morale.

The difference between an army fighting an imperialist war of conquest vs armies fighting for their national sense of identity and sovereignty. Those troops weren't sent there to protect Japanese people, they were sent there to colonize Chinese lands.
